Cosimo de’ Medici ordered the extensive renovation of the two principal monastic churches in Florence: Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce. Vasari’s Pentecost (1568) was the first altarpiece in the latter project. Cort, himself briefly active at Cosimo’s court in 1569-70, later engraved the composition in Rome.
