The Figures de modes render costumes in fashion during the last years of Louis XIV’s reign. This kind of print had been popular in seventeenth-century France. The series, originally composed of seven plates, was etched by Watteau himself in a very free hand, then developed with burin by Thomassin. First issued before 1710 in very small number, the series would appear in four more editions, including Julienne’s collection.
