On View
Not on viewIn 1537 Federigo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua, commissioned a series of the twelve Caesars. Titian completed eleven, Giulio Romano the twelfth. These were sold along with a significant portion of the ducal collection to Charles I of England in 1628. Transferred to the Spanish crown in 1652, they were destroyed in a fire in 1734. Along with various painted copies, Sadeler’s reproductions constitute the principal visual record.
