Kremser-Schmidt was the leading painter of religious works in lower Austria. He was also the most capable and prolific etcher of the period in Central Europe. This drawing was the preparatory study for an etching of Louis XVI, king of France, taking leave of his family, which included the Hapsburg queen, Marie Antoinette. This figure corresponds in reverse to that of his grieving young son in the right foreground of the composition
