Dario Robleto adapts the processes of both the DJ and the alchemist to the visual arts, appropriating readymade forms and transforming ordinary materials into uncanny, intriguing objects. Like much of Robleto’s recent work, both Daughters of Wounds and Relics and A Sadness Silence Can’t Touch present not historical artifacts, as they may initially seem, but hand-crafted objects cast from such unexpected and poetic substances as dissolved audio tape, ash, sweetheart letters, and lace from a Civil War era mourning dress. By physically embedding this meaningful matter into his sculptures, Robleto not only evokes history, he reanimates it by creating poignant memorials to war-time experiences of loss and healing.
