Initially an important artist in the Argentine surrealist movement, Juan Batlle Planas shifted his focus to abstraction during the 1950s. He brought to this new mode the same interest in delicate and unique color balances that characterizes most of his paintings. Flat areas of mauve and lavender shine against a dark background, surrounded by a remarkable array of warm grays—silver, pewter, graphite, and charcoal.
