Saint Vincent Ferrer, patron of builders, was a Dominican missionary born in Valencia, Spain, famous for his gifts as a preacher. Believed to be an “angel of the apocalypse” sent to prepare humankind for the Last Judgment, he was commonly represented with wings, as in this panel. The small size of the painting indicates that it was created as a devotional object for personal use in a convent or perhaps in a domestic setting. Although made in Peru, the panel was brought to Venezuela in the early eighteenth century.
