Collection Highlight
One of an original pair of two, this painting was conceived to be displayed within a church to honor Saint Francis, founder of one of the most prestigious orders of Catholic friars. Its sumptuous frame features a French rocaille on the top, a shell-like decorative motif characteristic of the Rococo style that was in vogue internationally in both decorative arts and architecture throughout the eighteenth century. Observing the frame from the side, it visibly bends in an S-shape, an effect intended to add movement. It was manufactured using various wood fragments which are still noticeable under the layers of plaster and red clay added to their surface to adhere the gold leaf during the gilding process. Brushstrokes made when adding golden paint during the frame’s conservation treatment are also perceptible.
