Around 1709 Watteau returned briefly to his native Valenciennes. Painting soldiers and military subjects in that garrison town, he had his first financial success and began to establish his reputation. Representing vagabonds or perhaps refugees from combat, Camp volant (today in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow), is the best known of these subjects.
