On View
Not on viewIn 1892 Charles-Marie Dulac converted to Catholicism and joined the Third Order of Saint Francis, a religious order conceived to accommodate members who were married From then on he focused on color lithographed landscapes as a medium to express his faith.
In 1894 Dulac created a series of nine lithographs entitled Canticle of Creatures as a visual companion to Canticle of the Sun, a religious song composed by Saint Francis in 1224. The inscription on this lithograph reads: “Jesus crown of all holiness. Jesus, eternal wisdom.” Considered a symbolist, Dulac sought to be an intermediary between emotion and expression and to create, through his imagery, a bridge between the real and the ideal.
