During his stay in the United States in the late 1920s, José Clemente Orozco used the medium of lithography to reproduce images from his murals in Mexico City. The prints served to familiarize the American audience with his work while also providing a stream of income. This somber image is based on Orozco’s 1926 mural "Trabajadores" ["Workers"] at the National Preparatory School (Colegio de San Ildelfonso), which presents a group of rural workers. The lithograph focuses on a detail, showing the face of a woman wearing a shawl or "rebozo," whose gentle form contrasts with her angular features.
