Devéria’s portrait of du Sommerard shows the range of marks the artist was able to achieve with lithography; from a free, sketch-like quality to an intense, photographic realism that reflects the character of the subject. Devéria was the most important exponent of portrait lithography, which became fashionable in the 1820s and 30s before the invention of photography.
