On View
Not on viewManuel Álvarez Bravo studied briefly with Italian-born photographer Tina Modotti. When she was deported from Mexico in 1930 for political reasons he purchased her cameras and took up her practice of capturing everyday images in the streets of Mexico City. “Un poco alegre y graciosa” shows Álvarez Bravo’s shift towards poetic imagery that has often been characterized as surrealist. In this case, the images seem uncanny due to the unusual perspective, interplay of textures, and unexpected combination of objects- including a white dress, a pair of legs, and a griddle filled with tortilla strips.
