Eugène Atget produced over ten thousand photographs of France throughout his life. Atget captured Paris in meticulous detail, creating a visual record of the rapidly modernizing city in the early twentieth century through doors, courtyards, streets, museums, storefronts, and Parisians themselves. While they serve as an important record of Paris and its inhabitants in the 1900s, Atget’s images capture mundane yet uncanny moments that endeared him to the Surrealists.
