Not on viewAn unknown engraver completed the background in stages, as is evident in the differing states of this print. In the fifth state one can see the progressive wearing of the plate; the engraved portion of the second state prints lighter than the rest of the background.
Son of Pieter Brueghel, Jan was a celebrated landscape and seascape painter. He often collaborated with other artists, including Peter Paul Rubens. Brueghel provided the landscape while Rubens furnished the narrative compositions with figures.
