The image is complete in the fourth state. Avant la lettre, meaning before letters, is a phrase often used to refer to the state where no identifying information such as title or publisher has been engraved in the margin. Miereveld was an accomplished portrait painter known for his sincerity in capturing a sitter’s likeness and his harmonious use of color. Artist circles at this time were notoriously tightly knit; if apprentices were not already blood relatives, they usually married into the family. Miereveld’s son-in-law engraved his portrait.
