The Battle of Avigliana, in western Piedmont, was a decisive victory for French forces over those of the duke of Savoy in 1630. This print commemorates the battle and celebrates the resultant elevation of the French commander, Henri II, duke of Montmorency (1595-1632), to the position of marshal of France. Shortly afterward, he would be involved in a conspiracy against Richelieu, disgraced, and executed.
