On View
Not on viewLucretia, a paragon of ancient Roman virtue, took her own life rather than live with the dishonor of having been violated by Tarquinus, the head of a rival tribe. According to Vasari, the famous biographer of the Italian painters and a great admirer of Parmigianino, the artist’s very last painting was a beautiful interpretation of Lucretia. Vico’s engraving, along with a finished drawing by Parmigianino’s follower Bedoli, is the best record of the painting’s composition.
