The statue of the Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons, a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original, was unearthed in 1506, immediately celebrated, and copied by innumerable artists. Based upon other prints of the statue, Gourmont’s is an unusually free interpretation of both the figural group and a classical antique setting.
