The Italian Landscapes consist of ten views of the Tuscan coast and countryside. It was traditionally thought that Giovanni de’Medici commissioned the series based on a letter Callot wrote to him in 1618 to present a series of landscape etchings (“the first of the kind I have made”). The actual circumstance of their creation, however, remains unclear. When the series was first published, in 1633, Callot’s French follower Collignon supplied a title page. Matted and stored with Callot near Lieure 268.
