This is one of three plates by Giulio Parigi illustrating a theatrical production. A professional printmaker born and first trained in Nancy, Callot came to Florence in 1612 and studied with Parigi for three years. With his elegant drawing and refined technique, Callot superseded Cantagallina as the illustrator of Parigi’s theatrical and festival designs for the Medici. Callot remained in service to Cosimo II until 1621, establishing at court the medium of printmaking and a fondness for prints representing everyday life.
