The château of Rincy (constructed 1643-50), located north of Paris, was created for Jacques Bordier, intendant of finances, by the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André Le Nôtre and the interior designer Charles Le Brun. The same trio worked on the construction of Versailles from 1661. In 1769-1785, the garden was remodeled in the English landscape style. In 1819 the château was dismantled; in 1852 the estate passed to the state, and in 1869 became the commune of Le Raincy. The print shows a mid-seventeenth century view of the château and garden. The embroidery-like design of the gravel and herb beds with their decorative scrolls is called parterre de broderie.
