On View
Not on viewSallaert made numerous designs for woodcut, including small blocks of the four Evangelists. Extraordinarily fluent in their cutting and lively in their characterization, these represent the last flourish of the technique in Flanders. They also struck Steinberg at first encounter and remain among his favorites. His collection includes fine, uniform impressions of the entire set. This additional impression on unfaded blue paper was surely intended for a connoisseur of the time.
