French lawyer, senator, scientist, archeologist and astronomer, to name only a few of his roles, Peiresc is most noted for discovering the Orion Nebula. He commissioned the help of engraver Claude Mellan to produce a map of the Moon’s surface but died in 1637 before its completion.
