In 1661, the year Louis XIV came of age and ascended the throne, Robert Nanteuil drew the pastel study for this print at Fontainebleau. Nanteuil engraved no less than eleven potraits of the King, only one of which reproduced a work by another artist. Such evidence that the engraver was received at court and sketched the King from life attests to the extent of printmakers’ newly acquired social status.
