The engravings are after a series of paintings by Rubens from 1622-1623 commissioned by Maria de'Medici, depicting allegorical scenes representing different episodes from her life. The paintings originally hung in a gallery in the Palais du Luxembourg and are now in the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
