This early work by Twachtman, probably painted shortly after his return from Europe in 1879, reflects the Munich School style and American Modernism because of its emphasis on realism rather than on gradations of light or vibrant color. Twachtman's later works echo this style of impressionistic brushwork but with brighter light and color, reflecting the influence of the French Impressionists such as Monet, whose paintings he saw while living and studying in Paris in the late 1880s.
