Though Brandt was influenced by Abstract Expressionists during his many years in New York City and studied with Philip Guston and Max Beckmann at Washington University in St. Louis, his mature style has been characterized as one of “domestic warmth.” Depicting the artist’s wife Grace and stepdaughter Berta, this painting recalls Henri Matisse’s interiors.
