Although the painting was completed sometime in the 1930s, Grant was clearly looking back to the Italian masters of the sixteenth century for inspiration. While the sketchy brushwork and almost abstract modeling of the forms are familiar modern techniques, the use of bright local color--orange, red and bue--amidst an overall dark composition is the influence of much earlier Venetian painters. Grant is combining old and modern painting ideas to create his own distinctive style.
