A multitalented painter and musician, Rivers was both a peer of the Abstract Expressionists and a colleague of the younger Pop artists who were gaining recognition in the early 1960s. Dead Veteran is a contemporary history painting, inspired by news magazine photographs of the funeral of the last surviving veteran of the Civil War. With bold inventiveness, Rivers here combined the dynamic abstract color harmonies of his teacher Hans Hofmann with loose gestures describing indeterminate space, expressively drawn figures, and images reproduced from mass media.
