Robert Jessup’s surreal images and monumental scenes confront the viewer with the ambiguities of life. In The Millstone, for example, the artist evokes both triumph and toil: the millstone of the title is both the tool of the worker’s trade and his burden to bear. Jessup has observed that artists “make pictures and tell stories to try to make sense of our lives.”
