Mold-made female figurines like these were widely popular in the Hellenistic period. They are called “Tanagra figurines” after the site in Boeotia, not far from Thebes, where they were first found. Many of these figurines have been found in graves. Their funerary importance may also be reflected in their appearance as molded decoration on South Italian vases also placed in tombs.
