On View
Not on view"Behind appearances exist other things," wrote Mario Rangel Sánchez, "I believe that the reality represented in my painting is not more arbitrary than everyday reality." Rangel very precisely and skillfully represents identifiable objects (trees, houses, boats), but he displays them in unexpected combinations and in ambiguous settings, leaving the viewer puzzled but at the same time enchanted by their delicate beauty. Ambiguity is a device utilized by this artist to provoke imaginative contemplation on the part of the viewer His art, which has been classified as art of fantasy or of the fantastic, exemplifies surrealistic trends that resonate in Mexican art. Through enigma, his art explores the magical qualities to be found in all aspects of life.
