Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, stands in a fighting pose with a spear and a round shield. Two owls perched upon Doric columns flank her. On the other side of the vessel, a man plays the double pipes for a bearded judge seated on a stool. This vase is a miniature version of the much larger containers of oil given as prizes at the Panathenaic Festival, a music and athletic contest in Athens.
