Saras exemplifies Rayo’s style of the 1970s. Rayo describes such works in his Sum Analysis artistic manifesto, first published in a Colombian exhibition catalogue of the early 1970s. He describes the symbolic potential of black and white, and describes how these two colors are inevitably intertwined: “when white sleeps it dreams of black.” In Saras, Rayo uses this relationship to create an image that conveys a human tactility. The painting’s “creases” seem to puff, as though the folds were exerting a real pressure onto the canvas. Clearly, Rayo has mastered illusionistic effects and uses them for his own distinct humor.
