Cottingham manipulates the context and thus the meaning of words to produce works that parody language. He draws his subject matter from the emblems and signs of city streets. In Hot, typically, Cottingham minimizes the surrounding details of the urban environment, cropping a view of a neon hotel sign and, as a result, altering its meanting.
