This oil sketch has been newly recognized as a study for the altarpiece of 1657 at Bondanello di Castelmaggiore (Bologna), itself first published in 1990. Trained by Lodovico Carracci and then drawn toward Venetian art, Cavedone was a leading painter in Bologna through the 1620s. Following personal misfortunes that began with the plague of 1630, his work slowed and, tradition has it, the interest of his work declined precipitously. The Bondanello altarpiece and now this drawing reveal a style by then out of fashion but all the more admirable in its vigor and dignity.
