Between 1935 and 1938, Abramo created a series of woodcuts in response to the Spanish Civil War entitled Espanha. These dark and frightening scenes reflect the chaos and trauma of war. This particular woodcut, Espanha 1936-37, depicts the heads of two comrades, each with a weapon at his shoulder, looking outwards with uncertainty and fear to an impending battle. This woodcut is an excellent example of Abramo's ability to produce an emotionally charged scene with a minimal amount of visual information.
