Here Piper recontextualizes three photographs culled from the mass media, each one crystallizing an important element in the debate about race in the United States. Through words and images, Piper asks viewers to “Pretend not to know what you know”—that is, to study with fresh eyes those images that alternately reproduce or contradict stereotypes and to abandon those preconceptions about racial identity that we accept as given and natural.
