Not on viewWorking as a printmaker, painter, draftsman, and sculptor, Chia creates powerful and expressive figures that recall the heroes and heroines of classical mythology. As a prominent member of the Italian “Transavanguardia” movement of the 1970s and ‘80s, Chia and his artistic colleagues contributed to a
revival of figurative depiction in painting and sculpture. Regardless of medium, Chia’s works are characterized by expressive brushstrokes, lively energy and heroic gestures. Sitzender Mann captures this vitality, counterposing raised limbs with grounded center and refracting light from its roughly textured surface.
Sitzender Mann is one of several bronze sculptures produced by Chia in the 1980s; mostly male figures, they range in size from small figurines to larger- than life "heroes."
