"Fortuna 7" is a map of the constellations Orion, Taurus, Gemini, Auriga, and Monoceros, where the stars that comprise these groups in the night sky are represented by coins featuring stars. Pablo Vargas Lugo selected coins from different countries and time periods so that their relative sizes would correspond to the sizes of the stars themselves. Vargas Lugo seeks to emphasize the intimate relationship between natural objects that are millions of years old, and political and historical aspirations that are ephemeral. According to the artist, this is a common operation, “using the mountain, the ocean or the sun, and appropriating them as part of a symbolic language inscribed in a political order, so as to grant a fictitious permanence to an ideological system.”
