Of the etchings of the school of Verona, Fontana’s are the most controlled in articulation, dense in description and suited to complex narrative. His subjects often correlate with the reasserted dogma and intensified devotion in the wake of the Council of Trent. Although signed on the face of the stone in the foreground, this print was only recently identified as his work.
