Not on viewWhile in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, Torres-García examined the leading avant-garde movements of his time--Cubism, Constructivism, and Surrealism--and eventually arrived at his own style. This Composition is a rare example of Torres-García’s exploration of Cubism, a style that challenged the notion of realistic representation while still providing visual clues to identify the subject matter. Torres-García broke down his subject into geometric shapes and then re-assembled them in a new way. This drawing is ambiguous, suggesting a bottle, a musical instrument, or even a figure walking.
