The Flagellation, from The Great Passion

Because they afforded little sense of discovery and required more substantial outlay, Steinberg rarely pursued prints by the most familiar masters, Dürer and Rembrandt. Still the Collection includes notable examples by each. The “Great” or “Large Passion”, the most dramatic of the three series Dürer devoted to the subject, began with seven compositions in 1497-98. The Flagellation is one of another four in a more equilibrated manner that were added in 1511. This is a fine, proof impression, with little wear to the block and before the edition with text on the reverse of each sheet.
