Many Catholic saints are depicted wearing chasubles to emphasize their role as humble low-ranking priests. This is also the case of Saint Phillip Neri, founder of the Congregation of the Oratory, or Oratorian Fathers, a community of men committed to charity without taking religious vows. This Venezuelan painting is on tin, a material that was cheaper that copper, which made it attractive for small devotional paintings aimed for domestic settings.
