Collection Highlight
This piece was made to support religious practices in domestic settings. Like their larger counterparts embellishing church interiors, manufacturing these smaller pieces entailed close collaboration between those who carved and built the actual objects, and those who decorated them in bright colors. This triptych includes on the central panel an image of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá. Echoing that sacred painting worshiped since 1562, in here, the Virgin Mary is flanked by Saint Anthony holding the Christ child and Saint Andrew with the cross. In the triptych’s wings, we see Saint John of Nepomuk, known as the patron saint against slander, and Saint Barbara, who was invoked against lightning and fire. In interlaced lettering, Mary’s monogram—MAR—can be appreciated when the object is closed, suggesting its intended portability.
