Ellsworth Kelly extracted what he called the “tumbling squares” motif from Chartres Cathedral’s thirteenth-century north rose window for one of the three stained-glass windows of Austin. In the medieval version, each of the twelve kings of Judah (Christ’s ancestors) occupy a square. Kelly’s sketch distills this design into pure geometry, which in Austin becomes a spectrum of radiant color.
