John Wilde’s work traverses the line between real and imaginary, exploring death, sex, and cycles of nature in playful drawings and paintings. Wildeview is a puzzling amalgamation of the imagery and artists that inspired Wilde’s work. The artist depicts himself in the lower left corner, pensively gazing out at the fantastical Midwestern landscape before him. Scattered letters spell out the names of several artists that Wilde greatly admired, including Albrecht Dürer, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, and Piero di Cosimo. Apparently incongruous objects refer to other artistic inspirations, such as Hieronymous Bosch, and Surrealists René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, and Max Ernst.
