Not on viewMargaret Garcia produced this screenprint at LA’s Self Help Graphics studios. She depicts actor Danny de la Paz (1957; known for his roles in American Me and Boulevard Nights) wearing a United Farmworkers Union (UFW) bucket hat. During the 1980s and 90s, the bucket hat was a staple accessory among hip-hop and rave culture. The represented hat wields the UFW’s thunderbird eagle logo’s distinctive design, prevalent throughout Chicano and Latino art, as a form of solidarity with farmworkers’ rights. In the 1980s, the UFW trademarked its eagle logo, and prioritized its entrepreneurial focus to develop alternative ways to sustain the union, releasing several products to expand their commercial reach, including hats, sweatshirts, and vests.
