Virginia L. Montgomery is known for her material experimentation, surreal films, and innovative photomontages, created by combining two or more photographs into one image. In Pony Cocoon, images of Montgomery as her artistic persona, “Business Witch,” are juxtaposed with the blossoming of a Luna moth from its cocoon. By uniting these unrelated images, her dreamlike film encourages viewers to draw a sense of hope and empowerment from the visual experience of a moth escaping its enclosure. The dripping honey that overlays the images at the opening and closing of the video symbolizes soothing and healing, reinforcing the artist’s message of hope for the possibility of metamorphosis, growth, and transformation.
